Changes From 1.5 to 2.0

  • Moved menu to center bottom screen
  • Changed menu items from text to icons
  • Word count bars have been added to the new menubar. They can be toggled on and off individually through the MenuBar right click menu. The "story" wordcount bars will display the wordcount of the currently active story (clicking on a document that belongs to a story switches the active story to that story).
  • All of the tool windows can now be opened and docked within full screen mode, allowing for switching between documents, viewing notes and synopsis, etc...
  • View tabs are now icons instead of text
  • View tabs are hidden on scenes when the scene does not have any child documents
  • Characters count display on the document window has been removed
  • The zoom slider on the document window has been removed. Holding Ctrl-while scrolling the wheel on your mouse will zoom the text windows.
  • Center Screen typing is now available in the windowed mode
  • The typewriter sound is now available in windowed mode.
  • Added shortcut keys Shift-Alt-Left and Shift-Alt-Right to move forward and back sequentially through the documents in your project
  • Added "Insert Hyperlink" to the document right-click menu
  • Added "Insert Macro" to the document right-click menu. This has a submenu with all of the macros
  • Added "Insert Template" to the document right-click menu.
  • Added view options to the right-click menu on a picture document
  • Image lists (in the insert Image Link menu and in the Cover and Scene Separator dropdowns) are now sorted by Story with images from the currently active story at the top
  • There is a new option in the preferences to automatically create a scene document when you create a new chapter. This is on by default.
  • Now does auto capitalization in the situations where it's possible to determine what is intended.
  • Items in the "Add To" context menus are now sorted by the name of the thing you're looking for (not the whole path, just the last part of it).
  • Themes have been updated with larger fonts and other tweaks to make them more accessible
  • Tablet Dark theme has been added
  • Mac & Cheese theme has been added
  • Fixed arrow directions for Carbon, Midnight, Tablet Dark, and Emerald themes in the File drawer tree so that they point in the standard direction
  • Added the ability for imports to an existing project to import more than one file at a time
  • Importing from RTF now trims whitespace from the beginning and end of a scene
  • Indents now adjusted to match StoryBox defaults when importing from RTF files
  • Importing now uses "[chapter]" instead of "- Chapter -" to split the chapters apart. This will be getting some more options, eventually
  • Added a new switch for epub/mobi formats in the Exporter called "Open To First Text". This will cause most e-readers to open to the first Act/Chapter/Scene document that is encountered. This seems to be becoming a standard, though some e-readers don't respect it. The default is on.
  • Title and Author have been removed from the front of export on plain text and RTF formats when there is a blank Story document. They remain in ePub format, as the Story document is the intended first page of an ePub document, and as such, should essentially be the title page.
  • Fixed: ePub export now passes latest epubcheck validation
  • Centered items are now stripped of any indents when exporting to ePub/mobi so that they are truly centered on the device. If you hate this, let me know and I'll make it an option, but it should save you from having to turn off auto format where you have items you want centered, since you won't have to worry about the indent.
  • Exporting to RTF no longer puts an extra empty line after a pagebreak
  • ePub export now centers properly in Nook reader (and, presumably, other readers based on the same software)
  • Adjustments made to [br] - it no longer gives double
    tags on some readers.
  • No longer cuts Kindle prepared indents in half (this was originally cut in half for older generation kindles that appeared to double the size of the indents and has been fixed in recent generations/updates)
  • No longer adds an extra linebreak after a scene separator for Kindle prepared exports
  • Selecting mobi format in the export no longer shows the Prepare for Kindle option, as modifying that option has no effect on mobi export
  • [br] tag now gives a proper line break on tested readers (kobo, kindle, nook, iBooks)
  • All wordcount settings and progress bars (except for the ones you can see on the menu bar, which are duplicates) are now combined into a single tool window called "Progress"
  • Story properties ( UID/ISBN, Cover Image, Scene Separator Image) are now in the Document Properties window, and will be available when you click on a story document.
  • ePub Info has been removed from Project Settings - the Publisher textbox was moved to Manuscript Info
  • Preserve Formatting has been changed to Auto Format.
  • Fixed an error that occurs when you delete the wordcount target from the wordcount target textbox, and hit enter without typing anything else
  • Added an option in the preferences to change the user template directory
  • Added 'Export to HTML' to the outline view context menu
  • Added 45 day, non-consecutive trial period. Editing will be disabled after StoryBox is opened on 45 different days. Exporting is not disabled.

  • Fixed a bug that could cause a project to have the version reset if a file I/O error occurred during load
  • Better handling of a rare exception when a document might be open already and it tries to find that document and can't. You may be forced to restart, but it shouldn't result in data loss from trying to open it and failing
  • Changed the layout of the preferences window
  • Made Word Usage page reflect the currently active story (the story for the document that is currently open)
  • StoryBox 2 can now run as a 64bit application on 64 bit computers
  • Installer now installs to the proper directory on 64 bit computers
  • Installer now includes certain required dll's for machines that do not have them installed. This does not include the .Net runtimes or XP Service Pack 3 - those still need to be downloaded separately
  • Installer now tries to close StoryBox if StoryBox is running when the installation is started
  • Added a Lookup item to the right click menu in the document view. You can now look up items on Dictionary.com, Google, and Wikipedia
  • Changed the trash so that it only shows the outline view. If you have any text in the Trash document, copy it out to somewhere else like the Notes tool, as it will become inaccessible after this upgrade.

  • Added Author and Publisher fields to the Import wizard
  • Fixed the positioning of the Import Wizard dialog
  • Fixed File Drawer expansion arrow directions for the Black theme
  • Changing the document type for a document will now cause it's properties to be set to the new document type's default settings

  • Active Document Selection Menu (next to the document tabs) now displays the documents in the order the tabs appear instead of by the order of when you opened them
  • Made changes to the default Character, Item and Location templates.
  • Fixed references in the code that referred to the old default template folder instead of the new location (which is in the common app data folder). This fixes a couple different bugs.
  • Fixed an error that could cause an exception when a document window tried to load while an existing document window has the same internal id (rare)
  • Using Add->New Character (or Item or Location) will now place the new document as a child of the currently selected document just like the other document types, as long as they are within the right tree (character is in the Characters tree, for instance). Otherwise, they will be placed in root of the proper tree
  • Using Add and Add Sibling on the File Drawer Context menu will now show Character, Item, or Location options if the root folder is Characters, Items, or Locations, respectively, regardless of the parent document. • Fixed an error with wordcount progress bars and wordcount targets when there are multiple stories and the one you are working on is not the one selected in the Progress tool window
  • Fixed an error that occurs when you delete the wordcount target from the wordcount target textbox, and hit enter without typing anything else
  • Items in the "Add To" context menus are now sorted by the name of the thing you're looking for (not the whole path, just the last part of it).
  • Reduced the "larger" font size by a point. I thought it looked to cramped. Extended that font size to all of the remaining themes.
  • Tweaked the positioning of a few items
  • Made Word Usage page reflect the currently active story (the story for the document that is currently open)
  • Minor tweaks to the preferences layout

BETA Version 2.0.3
01/30/2013

  • Importing from RTF now trims whitespace from the beginning and end of a scene
  • Fixed a bug that could cause a project to have the version reset if a file I/O error occurred during load
  • Now does auto capitalization in the situations where it's possible to determine what is intended.
  • Indents now adjusted to match StoryBox defaults when importing from RTF files
  • Better handling of a rare exception when a document might be open already and it tries to find that document and can't. You may be forced to restart, but it shouldn't result in data loss from trying to open it and failing
  • Importing now uses "[chapter]" instead of "- Chapter -" to split the chapters apart. This will be getting some more options, eventually

BETA Version 2.0.2
01/11/2013

  • Updates to some of the themes. Still work to be done here
  • There is a new option in the preferences to automatically create a scene document when you create a new chapter. This is on by default.
  • Added a new switch for epub/mobi formats in the Exporter called "Open To First Text". This will cause most e-readers to open to the first Act/Chapter/Scene document that is encountered. This seems to be becoming a standard, though some e-readers don't respect it. The default is on.
  • Added the ability for imports to an existing project to import more than one file at a time
  • Fixed: Bug that caused the wordcount statistics page to report wrong values if it was left open when closing the project
  • Fixed: Bug that caused the application to not cover the task bar when switching to full screen mode if StoryBox was maximized already

BETA Version 2.0.1
10/29/2012

  • Made changes to the layout of the export and print dialogs. They now show the list of files that will be included.
  • You can now save export profiles so that you can quickly export several different versions of your book that may have different settings or include different sets of files. If you want to save to a new profile, type a name in the box at the top of the export dialog. If you want to modify an existing profile, select the profile from the dropdown, make the changes, then click save. Clicking Export or Print does not save the profile.
  • Progress window added for file exports
  • Changed: Now, if you want to create a .mobi file, you must select the mobi output format. This will require that you have KindleGen installed for it to work correctly.
  • Changed: Selecting ePub output format and selecting "Prepare for Kindle Conversion" no longer creates a .mobi file, but will create an ePub that is appropriate for uploading to Amazon
  • Added: Export option that removes text that has had the strikeout style applyed to it. This is defaulted to on.
  • Added: You can now use custom text scene separators
  • Added: you can now specify ISBN numbers to be included in your epub and mobi exports. These can be saved in each export profile. You can still set a default one in the properties of the Story document.
  • Drastically improved the loading speed of the outline view in projects with large numbers of documents
  • Fixed: A bug during project file upgrades that reset your wordcount progress to 0 each time, making it look like you wrote a LOT of words that day that you loaded a new file into an update of StoryBox

BETA Version 2.0.0
9/25/2012

  • Moved menu to center bottom screen
  • Changed menu items from text to icons
  • Full screen mode now uses the existing window making the switch between normal and fullscreen much faster
  • All of the tool windows can now be opened and docked within full screen mode, allowing for switching between documents, viewing notes and synopsis, etc...
  • View tabs are now icons instead of text
  • View tabs are hidden on scenes when the scene does not have any child documents
  • The carbon theme has been changed to be more accessible for touch screens (larger fonts) and tablets.
  • Tablet Dark theme has been added
  • Characters display on the document window has been removed
  • The zoom slider on the document window has been removed. Holding Ctrl-while scrolling the wheel on your mouse will zoom the text windows.
  • Title and Author have been removed from the front of export on plain text and RTF formats when there is a blank Story document. They remain in ePub format, as the Story document is the intended first page of an ePub document, and as such, should essentially be the title page.
  • Word count bars have been added to the new menubar. They can be toggled on and off individually through the Configuration->Menu Bar menu. The configuration icon looks like a gear. The "story" wordcount bars will display the wordcount of the currently active story (clicking on a document that belongs to a story switches the active story to that story).
  • Moved the wordcount bars to a tool window called Progress.
  • Center Screen typing is now available in the normal view (henceforth called "windowed")
  • The typewriter sound is now available in windowed mode.
  • Added an option in the preferences to change the user template directory
  • Added 'Export to HTML' to the outline view context menu
  • Fixed: ePub export now passes latest epubcheck validation
  • Image lists (in the insert Image Link menu and in the Cover and Scene Separator dropdowns) are now sorted by Story with images from the currently active story at the top

10/19/2012

  • Fixed: A bug that caused some generated ePub files to fail when uploading to Kobo Writing Life.

9/25/2012

  • Changed: The thesaurus no longer loads completely into memory from a text file, but instead has been moved to a database file that is accessed as needed. This saves about 80mb in memory footprint with little to no noticable change in performance, and may improve loading speed on low end machines.
  • Fixed: Spelling and thesaurus now correctly find words that contain apostrophes when smart quotes are enabled.
  • Fixed: Spelling and thesaurus replacements containing apostrophes now use the correct apostrophe when replacing a word

Version 1.5.138
6/20/2012

  • Fixed: Import from text file truncates when Unicode object replacement character 0xFFFC is in the text file (Scrivener uses this in text export to replace embedded images, apparently).
  • Fixed: Crash on some computers when trying to enter full screen
  • Fixed: In some circumstances, the file vesion of a project could be set incorrectly to 0, making it impossible to load. If you are getting an "later version" message on a project, send me the project at the support email (support @ storyboxsoftware.com) and I will fix the file for you.

Version 1.5.137
6/04/2012

  • Added: You can now resize the full screen text area by dragging the left and right edges.
  • Added: 'Export Chapters To Separate Files" option to the export dialog. It exports only the chapter documents and their children. This is useful when you are working on a print publication in applications like InDesign. This is currently only active for RTF and TXT exports.
  • Removed: The width adjustment slider in full screen mode has been removed since you can drag the edges of the text area.
  • Added: Currently active highlight around the index cards in storyboard view
  • Fixed: Toggling the Include In Manuscript checkbox now updates the Story wordcounts properly
  • Fixed: A bug causing documents added via Add Sibling to not have their text counted in Story wordcounts.
  • Fixed: StoryBox will no longer crash if the version of Windows you are using does not support ISO8859-1. The Thesaurus will not be available, however if this is the case.
  • Fixed: Exporting a single chapter will no longer result in an extra blank page at the beginning if the chapter has 'Page Break Before' checked.
  • Fixed: StoryBox will no longer change the font on a document that has "Preserve Formatting" turned off except by changing the default font either in Preferences, or by clicking the "Set Default" button in the font window.
  • Added: A popup message to warn about changing fonts on a document that has "Preserve Formatting" turned off.
  • Fixed: Font size changes now work correctly in most cases when exporting to ePub. There might be one or two instances of something that breaks it. If you see it not working, please let me know.
  • Fixed: Crash on Windows XP when exiting the application after typing in full screen mode

Version 1.5.136

  • Added: If you have smart quotes enabled (Project Settings), pressing <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<quote> will produce a straight single quote
  • Added: Document history and toolbar buttons to help you navigate back and forth through it. Also, <Ctrl>+<9> and <Ctrl>+<0> will navigate to previous or next documents if there are any in the history

  • Fixed: File Drawer now scrolls to the selected document on load.

Version 1.5.120
10/5/2011

  • CHANGED!!! StoryBox now requires Microsoft .Net 4.0
  • Added: Double-clicking the session time display in the main window status bar now restarts the session. Nothing is lost - only the session start time is reset and the session wordcount is reset.

  • Added: Exports images (including separator images) in RTF format
  • Added: Import To New Project wizard that should (I hope) make it less confusing

  • Added: You can now insert a Table of Contents page into ePub exports using the [toc] (including square brackets) SB code. The best option is to create a blank document where you want the TOC to be, make sure "Preserve Format" is checked, then set the indent to 0. Then type in the [toc] code. Check "Page Break Before" if you wish, and make sure "Include in Manuscript" is checked. Having this code in your document is required for ePubs that are converted to Kindle format if you want the Table of Contents to work on the Kindle.
  • Added: Toolbar formatting and cut/copy/paste buttons now work on notes/synopsis/index card text areas as well as the main document window. Currently, index cards and synopsis will not maintain most formatting as they store only text. This will be addressed in a later build.
  • Added: SmartQuotes. There is a new checkbox under Project Settings to enable smart quotes for a project. This defaults to on for new projects. Existing projects will not be affected by it (they will be off) until you change it for them. Toggling this checkbox will not adjust your existing quote style in your document.
  • Added: Context menu to Synopsis and Notes text areas
  • Fixed: The Add To ____ context menu items no longer include documents that have been trashed

  • Fixed: Problem causing the "Add To..." menu items to not add text to the appropriate documents notes.

Version 1.4.115

  • Fixed: Exception when there is no story in the document. This may happen if you changed the type of your story document before updating to 1.4.113.

  • Added: Warning about changing a document type to Story that informs you that the change is permanent
  • Fixed: Dragging a document with children from one Story to another Story now updates the children correctly
Known Issue: Currently, you can only set the cover image and the scene separator for the whole project. • Fixed: Even more speed improvement to the paste operation
  • Fixed: Layout reset notification should now appear in front of the splash screen
  • Fixed: Small typing speed improvement. You won't notice on most normal sized documents, but it's noticable as you approach a couple hundred thousand words (which I don't recommend doing in a single document).

  • Fixed: Possible error while loading projects when a file read fails
  • Fixed: Speed of the context menu appearing improved greatly on large documents
  • Fixed: Selected spelling suggestion should now scroll into view properly
Known Issue: Currently, you can only set the cover image and the scene separator for the whole project. I'll get this in a later update

  • Changed: UID/ISBN no longer appears in the Project Settings tool window (it's now in the Story Properties)

- Fixed: Scrollbar visibility is updated when toggling between Center Typing states
- Fixed: Toggling center typing off will now reset the position of the text if the text length is less than the height of the screen
- Improved: There's a bug in Microsoft's Rich Text control where, if you use paragraph spacing (extra space between paragraphs), starting a line off with multiple spaces causes some weird formatting behavior (it seems to add extra vertical lines for each additional space). This is just a drawing bug, and can be "worked around" by resizing the text area which will reset the text back to it's proper spacing. Of course, that's annoying to do all the time by hand, so if you are in this situation and you need several additional spaces at the start of a paragraph, StoryBox will do this for you. It's an ugly hack, though, and the text still jumps a bit after each space, but it's better than nothing. I wish I could fix Microsoft's code, but I can't.

- Rename item added to File Drawer context menu [267]
- The way the file drawer clicks work has changed, yet again. Now, clicking once on any document will open it. If you want to expand a node, you must click the expand icon to the left of it. Clicking twice in succession (without clicking fast enough for a double click) will cause a rename. Double clicking will open the document and expand any children. Trying to make this work any other way results in either the need to not open documents except on a double click - or just plain bizarre and complicated behavoir, neither of which I want. [258]

- Keyboard shortcuts for italics, bold, underline and strikethrough now work in ALL RTF capable text areas (main document area, notes, and full screen view).
- Added Strikethrough option to the context menu in full screen mode

Version 0.2.60 07/15/2010

CAUTION!

Back up your projects before running this build for the first time! It creates backups of them when it adjusts the file format, but it's better to be safe, if you know what I mean.

- RTF Importing! See the added section in the help file for details on formatting it (similar to .txt import - it's not large)[97]
- Fixed import as child option on context menu - now it actually does something
- Fixed search form - I managed to break it totally in the previous build
- Modified the word count algorithm slightly. It will probably come in slightly under MS Word and Open Office as I don't count a single punctuation mark surrounded by spaces as a word. For example, ' - ' [207]
- Added some whitespace on the left hand side of the main text area to help with readability
- Fixed issues with word count progress bars not getting themed correctly if they were not visible when StoryBox was opened[237]
- Changed numbering system of scenes on import to reflect the numbering system when scenes are added individually
- Document tab tooltips now show the full path to the document as it's listed in the File Drawer
- Added document types for the root folders (Story, Characters, Locations, Items, Box of Notes and Trash[238]
- StoryBox now makes a backup of the .box (filename.box.bak) before trying to upgrade the file to the latest version. Note that not all builds upgrade the file format, so won't always generate a .bak file
- Added the ability to create additional story nodes for those that like like to keep similar stories or novels in the same project.[238]
- Clicking on an unexpanded document in the File Drawer that has children (like a chapter with scenes) will not open that document, but will instead expand the node. It will open the document if it is already expanded.
- Clicking on an already selected node after working in a scene or closing a document will not go immediately to the title edit mode, but will instead, open the document again or expand the node if it wasn't expanded and has children. Clicking on it a second time will enter title edit mode for the node.
- Double clicking an item in the outline will open that document[240]
- Fixed an occaisional crash when using the eye icon on the the first index card in the Storyboard to open a document

Version 0.1.59 07/14/2010

- Fixed Ctrl Key shortcuts that were broken in 0.1.58 (Ctrl + B, Ctrl + I, Ctrl + U)
- Fixed outline changes not being stored (introduced in 0.1.58) [ 234]
- Emdashes no longer get converted to hyphens when a document is reloaded or exported[235]
- Emdashes can be inserted using Ctrl - (Control + minus)
- Added options to set the Outline View Chapter Title font style (size and bold)[234]
- Fixed the Preferences->Format tab so that it is stylistically similar to the other tabs (you can read it in the black theme)
- Various items no longer cause updates when exiting the Preferences form if their values weren't changed (should be a speedier return)

Version 0.1.58 07/13/2010

- Added Whole Word and Case Sensitive to search options
- Added Strikethrough formatting toggle to the context menu (also Ctrl-K) [198]
- Added the ability to set spacing between paragraphs to the Format tab in Preferences [223]
- Fixed who/whom issue in character interview (I never get these right) [220]
- Updated to a newer version of the control library. Supposedly there is a speed increase with regard to load times (I'm not sure I see it), but there were some bug fixes and dragging documents from one place to another in the tree seems slightly less fiddly.
- Increased the height of and the distance between the items in the file drawer to help improve dragging documents around (made it even less fiddly)
- Switched out the control I was using for the Outline view for a different one that is less broken.
- Removed an extraneous spacer item on the Edit Menu
- Made some changes to the information bar at the bottom of the full screen view.
- Tasklist '-' button is now enabled correctly when adding and removing the first/last task
- Added tooltips for task and search buttons
- Added Icon Style menu items under themes so you don't have to go into Preferences to change them
- Chapter titles get a larger, bold font in the outline view (the document must be marked as a Chapter in the document settings).
- Context menus for the document editor and the File Drawer are now themed appropriately.

Version 0.1.57 07/11/2010

- Zoom state is restored correctly when returning from full screen. [232]
- The "Document" tab to the left of the document view is now labeled with the type of document it is instead of saying "Document". I'm not entirely sure that this won't be confusing to some people - so if you're confused, let me know and I'll revert it. If you like it, let me know, too.
- Added a "Forum" menu item under help that will take you to the support forums.

Version 0.1.56 07/09/2010

- Added Next/Previous Search bar that displays during a search that allows finding the next and previous instance of search text in a document [217]
- Ctrl-F now brings up the search pane instead of F3
- F3 Searches next in the current document. Shift-F3 searches previous. The document must be active (click in it) for this to work.
- Toggles added for searching notes, synopsis, tags and title. The default had been to always search everything [130]
- The notes field now accepts the tab key [225]
- Search/Replace added. You can show the replace tools by selecting "Show Replace" from the menu that decends from the "Search Options" button next to the search box. [231]
- Fixed an issue with controls in the Project->Manuscript Info pane not resizing properly when the Project pane windows is resized horizontally

Version 0.1.55 07/06/2010

- Export to RTF is much better now. General formatting settings are preserved. More esoteric settings may not be. If you see something that's really not right, file a bug and send me the project so I can figure out how to fix it.
- Importing existing books via the Import feature now places the default chapter template in the chapter documents
- Pasting images larger than 1024 pixels in any direction now resizes them so that they are no larger than 1024 pixels in any dimension so that they shouldn't cause an out of memory error in the rtf control on some operations. You should take care when pasting multiple images into a single document, however, as that may still cause an out of memory error when trying to view that document
- Added [doctitle] macro that will be replaced on export with the title of the document

Version 0.0.54 05/23/2010

- Preview no longer includes files that do not have the "Include In Manuscript" checkbox checked.

- Fixed crash when using the search functionality
- Fixed font color in full screen mode when typing into an empty document
- Fixed additional monitors not being blanked when fullscreen mode is entered (if anyone doesn't like this, file a bug and I'll add an option)
